Artist
Peter Paul Rubens
Medium
Painting - Oil On Canvas
Description
The canvas painting of Romulus - the legendary founder and first king of Rome and his twin brother Remus was created in the middle of the second decade of the seventeenth century in Antwerp, where the artist settled upon his return to Italy. In fact, Rubens was one of the first foreign artists in the seventeenth century that had a long, fruitful Italian experience from 1600 to 1608. In the painting, the central group derives from an ancient sculpture of the She-wolf and the twins next to the Tiber River. The artist saw and drew this sculpture group in the Vatican.
